Treating the Spine and Neck

Treatment for spine and neck disorders varies, based upon a combination of factors, including individual needs, overall health, and other factors.

At the center of all spine disorders is pain. At the center of all treatment programs is eliminating or reducing that pain, and increasing mobility. Treatments range from the non-invasive to minimally invasive to invasive surgery. Non- invasive procedures, often the first step in treatment, will often include:

  • exercise
  • physical therapy
  • massage
  • medication

Medication may include over-the-counter pain medicine, physician-prescribed medications, or a combination of the two. Alternative therapy, may also be an option some patients want to explore. If these non-invasive techniques do not achieve the desired results, together, you and your physician may decide to explore more aggressive treatment options, such as steroid injections, nerve blocks, and surgery.

Your medical care team will often include a primary care physician, orthopedist, and/or an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine care. A rheumatologist may also be part of your care team.
